In a move signaling a significant shift towards a sustainable future, the Vodafone Iberdrola partnership marks a key milestone in the global renewable energy landscape. With power purchase agreements (PPA) spanning Spain, Portugal, and Germany, Vodafone has secured a powerful ally in Iberdrola for its net-zero mission.

The Power Agreement: Ibderdrola Bringing Renewable Energy to Telecoms

Iberdrola, one of the world’s largest renewable energy companies, and Vodafone, the largest pan-European and African telecoms company, have signed new clean energy PPAs, adding to a recent agreement in Germany. Together, they’ve also pledged to explore new PPA opportunities and sustainability initiatives across Europe.

“Iberdrola and Vodafone are both committed to connecting customers and communities to a cleaner and smarter future,” says Aitor Moso, Global Clients Director of Iberdrola.

“Agreements with progressive businesses like Vodafone are increasingly important in allowing new renewables projects to be built.”

Green Energy for Vodafone Portugal and Spain

In Portugal, the PPA will provide energy from the newly built Velilla solar PV plant located in Palencia, Spain. For Vodafone Spain, the newly constructed Cedillo PV plant in Cáceres, Spain, will deliver a whopping 280 GWh per year.

Germany’s Shift to Solar: Boldekow PV Plant

Meanwhile, Vodafone Germany is set to fully benefit from the Boldekow PV plant – Iberdrola’s first solar project in the country, and will be fully operational by 2024.

“These agreements across Europe underline Vodafone’s commitment to ensure our customers will continue to benefit from electricity purchased 100% from renewable sources,”

stated Joakim Reiter, Vodafone Group Chief External & Corporate Affairs Officer.

Driving Electric Vehicles: Iberdrola Contribution to Vodafone

Iberdrola, in line with its commitment to sustainability, has installed over 140 electric vehicle charging points at Vodafone’s main facilities in Spain. It’s not just about power supply; it’s also about shaping a sustainable, green future.

Further Plans for Sustainability and Decarbonization

Looking ahead, the Vodafone Iberdrola partnership is set to explore additional PPAs to support Vodafone’s ambitious climate plans in Europe. They are also considering various sustainability projects aimed at decarbonizing operations and meeting environmental goals in the future.

They also provide Vodafone with improved energy security and long-term price certainty as we work towards achieving net-zero in our operations by 2030, added Reiter.

In total, these PPAs will provide Vodafone with 410 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of clean, renewable photovoltaic (PV) solar energy per year in the three countries. It’s a step that not only accelerates Vodafone’s net-zero journey but also enhances its energy security.

Iberdrola & Vodafone – A promising future?

The Vodafone Iberdrola partnership paints a promising picture of a future where global corporations actively pursue sustainability. It showcases the potential of renewable energy to revolutionize even the most technology-driven industries like telecommunications.
