London Tech Week, one of the world’s leading tech festivals, kicked off with an impactful announcement from Mayor Sadiq Khan. Aiming to mitigate the capital’s vulnerability to climate change, the Mayor revealed an independent review (London Climate Resilience Review) to explore the potential of technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), to adapt London to the challenges of climate change.

A Call to Action at London Tech Week

Sadiq Khan, at the opening of London Tech Week, highlighted the city’s success as a global hub for tech businesses. In fact, London & Partners’ data reveals that the city has welcomed over 1,700 new international tech firms, outpacing San Francisco and New York.

In his speech, the Mayor praised the city’s tech sector for its ongoing initiatives against climate change, air pollution, and congestion. He noted that the congestion charging zone’s digital infrastructure, real-time pollution alerts from air quality sensors, and the use of data and AI to reduce congestion were all key contributions to the cause.

London Climate Resilience Review

The independent London Climate Resilience Review, led by Emma Howard Boyd CBE, Chair of the Green Finance Institute, will delve into how data and technology can be leveraged to respond to the climate emergency more effectively.

In recent years, London has felt the severity of climate change impacts despite proactive policies and programmes, and record investment from City Hall. The devastating 2021 flash floods and the fires of 2022 revealed the city’s vulnerabilities, underscoring the urgency of concerted action.

Investment Towards Climate Resilience

The Mayor has so far invested over £25m to enhance London’s climate resilience. The funding includes a £24 million investment through the Green New Deal fund, and an additional £1.5 million for climate adaptation measures in 95 London schools at significant climate risk.

Through the Mayor’s Climate Resilient Schools programme, in collaboration with Thames Water and the Department for Education, more than 550 rainwater planters have been installed, and water audits have been carried out, saving over 550,000 litres of water per day. Additionally, the program has developed 60 bespoke climate plans for high-risk schools.

Take Home from London Tech Week

This ambitious endeavour, announced at London Tech Week, signifies the city’s resolve to turn the tide against the climate crisis. By drawing on the innovative spirit and capabilities of the tech sector, London is not just preparing to withstand the impact of climate change but is taking steps to shape a future that is resilient, sustainable, and inclusive.

As we eagerly await the outcomes of the London Climate Resilience Review, we invite our readers to share their thoughts.
