Orlen Group Acquires Three Wind Farms in Poland

In a significant boost for the energy transition in Poland, the Orlen Group has marked another milestone in its renewable energy investments with the acquisition of three wind farms from EDP Renewables Polska. This move adds a hefty 142MW to Orlen’s growing renewable capacity and reinforces its commitment to leading the region’s energy transition by 2030.

Details of the Orla Acquisition

The wind farms, located in the picturesque Wielkopolska region, were commissioned in 2021 and 2022 and are among the most modern and effective wind farms in Poland. The assets are powered by 4.2MW turbines, one of the largest currently used in the country. Orlen Wind 3 of the Orlen Group executed the transaction, which is expected to be finalized later this year.

Moreover, the agreement includes an exciting option for photovoltaic development up to 159MW that can be implemented on the basis of cable pooling.

Impact and Benefits

This investment not only significantly increases Orlen’s total renewable capacity, but it also has a profound impact on clean energy supply in the region. Capable of supplying clean energy to an impressive 240,000 households annually, these wind farms are set to significantly contribute to the renewable energy landscape in Poland.

Daniel Obajtek, chief executive and president of the Orlen Management Board, said, “We are executing one of the most significant transactions in the domestic renewable energy market in recent years. Our consistent investments in this segment aim to offer clean and competitively priced energy to our customers.”

Orlen: Future Goals and Plans

This acquisition aligns with Orlen’s strategic commitment to leading the energy transition in Poland. As Obajtek states, “By 2030, we plan to have approximately 9GW of installed renewable capacity, thus becoming the energy transition leader in the region. The agreement concluded today will increase our RES portfolio with exceptionally high-quality generation units.”

The acquisition of these wind farms, characterized by a great location ensuring high winds and high utilization of installed capacity, signals a promising future for Poland’s energy transition. The move reaffirms Orlen’s dedication to renewable energy, bringing us a step closer to a future powered by clean and sustainably sourced energy.

As we follow Orlen’s ambitious journey towards becoming a regional leader in renewable energy by 2030, we would love to hear your thoughts. How do you perceive the role of such acquisitions in shaping the future of energy in Poland? Let us know in the comments below.
