In an ambitious stride towards fortifying Brazil’s position in the renewable energy landscape, Denham Capital has announced the sale of a Brazilian renewables company to Equinor. With this move, Denham Capital has carved out a new entity, Pontal Energy, to manage a significant 1GW portfolio of renewable energy.
Denham Sells and Launches New Platform
The deal with Equinor encompasses select assets from Rio Energy, the Rio Energy brand, and the newly formed Pontal Energy platform. This latter entity is particularly noteworthy as it represents a strategic pivot by Denham Capital’s Sustainable Infrastructure team towards an increased focus on Brazilian renewable energy assets.
Overview of Pontal Energy’s Assets
Pontal Energy is poised to steward the assets and projects retained by Denham in the transaction, which consist of 1GW of capacity. The platform’s portfolio is impressive, featuring three operational wind farms: the 100MW Caetité asset, the 200MW Itarema asset, and the 200MW Serra da Babilônia 3 asset. Moreover, it includes the 200MW Caetité Norte wind project, which is currently under construction, and an additional 300MW from various wind and solar pipeline projects.
Leadership and Management Team at Pontal Energy
Denham Capital has bolstered the leadership of Pontal Energy by appointing Gustavo Ribeiro as CEO, a veteran who has successfully overseen the development of over 6GW of power projects in the region.
“As the newly appointed CEO of Pontal Energy, I’m thrilled to lead an organization supported by the vision and expertise that Denham Sustainable Infrastructure provides,” Ribeiro commented.
His experience is expected to be a driving force in the company’s future endeavors.
Ana Marta Veloso, a long-standing chair of Rio Energy, will continue her role for Pontal, ensuring continuity and stability in the platform’s strategic direction.
Commitment to Brazil’s Renewable Energy
This initiative reflects Denham Capital’s enduring commitment to the development of clean energy within Brazil. Sarah Lane, Managing Director of Denham Sustainable Infrastructure, conveyed the organization’s dedication: “The launch of Pontal Energy is a testament to Denham Sustainable Infrastructure’s commitment to Brazil’s clean energy sector.”
Pontal Energy’s establishment is a clear indicator of the increasing momentum within Brazil’s renewable sector. With such profound expertise and robust assets under its wing, the platform is well-equipped to facilitate Brazil’s transition to a more sustainable energy matrix.
